Small by Choice: A Quiet Statement in a Loud World

The Technical/Artistic Choice to Create in Small Formats – and Why It’s Significant

So, Why Small?

My choice of small formats is no coincidence. It was born out of necessity – but also out of a love for intimate things. For private moments. For things that ask you to get closer, not farther away. As a creator, small work allows me to move freely. It allows me to touch an emotion without weighing it down. To say little – and leave room for those who look.

We live in a time of size. Huge networks, media flooding, open spaces, bombastic statements. Amidst all this noise, a small work can invite silence. It doesn’t have to take up an entire wall. It just has to capture you. A small work does not “fight” for space; it does not need to take up space. It finds a quiet corner for itself and begins to breathe from there. On a shelf, in a hallway, above a desk. It does not take over the space – it fits into it, like a second breath.

The small format is accurate to our world

Our walls are full of shelves, memories, children, and objects. Not every home is suitable for a work the size of a living room wall. But almost every home can contain a touch of color, emotion, or thought – if it is presented in an intimate way.

Sometimes, small is exactly what is needed.

The poet Rilke wrote:

“Works of art are of an infinite loneliness... they are the loneliest things of all.” The small format allows the work to be left alone for a while, and you to approach without fear.

Practically, a small work is easily sent, wrapped with love, given as a gift without having to calculate walls or frames. It can move from apartment to apartment, from shelf to shelf – and continue to tell its story. In my opinion, there is freedom in this too.

Ultimately, size is only on the outside

I create in small – but I want to say through each work: attention is not measured in centimeters but in the ability to stop and the willingness to observe and feel

Want to see what it looks like in practice?

With love, you are invited to take a look at my collection of works.

There are quiet, delicate, intimate paintings there –

And maybe one of them will feel exactly like your little treasure.
