How can we recognize a work that "speaks to us"?
There is such a moment when we are standing in front of a work, and suddenly something happens. Sometimes it takes a moment or a second. It is not clear exactly what, but it feels like pressing an internal button. The eye stops. The breath changes. The body may tremble slightly, the heart opens, or suddenly a small, intimate smile creeps in.
It is not always a "beautiful" work. Sometimes it is an asymmetrical work or in colors that we would not usually hang in the living room.
Maybe even strange. Not clear. But there is something about it that is "Us". Some little truth that hasn't been put into words – and here it is, on paper or canvas.
This happens when something inside responds
Work that "speaks to us" doesn't try to please. And the viewer doesn't seek to acquire or to catalog. Simply observes. Open. And suddenly, something inside responds. This is where art truly touches:
When there is no effort to understand, only a feeling.
Something said without words – and completely understood.
How will we recognize that this is it?
* When we find ourselves going back to glance at it again.
* When we talk to ourselves about it, even hours later.
* When something inside feels familiar, but different.
* When it reminds us of a dream. Or a longing. Or something we didn't know we remembered.
Art that speaks to us doesn't need an explanation
It simply touches. It doesn't always match the wall color, but it suits us. And it will suit the house, precisely because of that.
And so what?
Like with a good book or a poem that stays with us –
A work like this can accompany us for years. Remind. Deepen. Hold us – when we need it.
Here is a short exercise to recognize a work that speaks to us
Before you scroll further… stop for a moment and examine yourself…
1. Enter the gallery at the link - 🔗 Link to my gallery - https://www.tal-stoobik.com/all-products
2. Choose one work that catches your eye
3. Look at the work quietly, without rushing, as you would look at a person, not just at colors and shapes, but at the feeling that comes with them.
4. Pay attention to your body, has your breathing changed? Is something moving inside?
Maybe you suddenly feel like smiling. Maybe a memory pops up.
5. Listen to the thoughts that arise. Does it remind you of a place? An emotion? Someone?
Sometimes the work doesn't tell a clear story – but it tells *us* something that touches us.
6. Ask yourself
* Do I want to go back and see it again?
* Would I like it to live in my house with me?
* Is there anything about it that reminds me of me?
7. If you answered "yes" to section 6, save the work in a folder. Don't decide right away.
If it continues to resonate with you and accompany you even after you've closed the site, there's a good chance you've found your own little treasure.
